Lapas grelhadas (grilled limpets) 1 comment

Yesterday, I had lunch with the family at Fall River Grill, in Fall River, MA. My wife Elsa was craving lapas (limpets) and since we had to go to North Dartmouth, MA, for an eye exam for her, we stopped in Fall River for lunch.

The food was good. We generally avoid Portuguese restaurants in the Providence area, because we do not like any of them. In general, I feel, they are either too far removed from what is Portuguese food, or else they employ cheap ingredients which make the meal taste, in plain terms, bad. Since Fall River is too far away, we do not go there often, so yesterday we combined the need to go to North Dartmouth with the pleasure of a good meal in a Portuguese restaurant.

Besides Lapas, we also had bitoque (Filipa), garoupa grelhada (Elsa and Maya), caldo verde (Maya) and bife da casa (me).

It all tasted really good and the ambiance was typically Portuguese.

Japanese candy 1 comment

One thing that you notice traveling outside the USA is that most food tastes different in other places. Even the same product has a different taste elsewhere. Another thing is that there is a lot more variety, perhaps because there is more interest in things from other countries as opposed to the USA where foreign things are sometimes frowned upon. Check out this article about Japanese candy in New York Magazine.

Writing with Food No comments yet

Yesterday I started a class offered by the Brown University Continuing Education Studies Department. It’s title is Writing with Food. It’s being taught by Carol DeBoer-Langworthy and runs from Oct 7 to Nov 18, 2008.

The first class went quite well. I am the only male in the class, which suits me just fine. I enjoyed  hearing from all the students. We did an exercise and I was excited to hear so many good stories from each and every student. I think there will be some good stories developed during the class.

We are using “American Food: The Gastronomy Story,” by Evan Jones. Carol knows the author’s widow personally.
